Bob Dylan - Nobel Lecture

Bob Dylan has now delivered his lecture for the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature! It was recorded on June 4, 2017 in Los Angeles and posted the following day on the official Nobel Prize organization's website.

Any Buddy Holly or Moby Dick fans here? If so, you may particularly enjoy Dylan discussing these (and other) early influences. If not, it is interesting to learn how Dylan's songwriting was influenced by both classic literature and pop music artists.

Dylan began his lecture with this statement:
When I first received this Nobel Prize for Literature, I got to wondering exactly how my songs related to literature. I wanted to reflect on it and see where the connection was. I'm going to try to articulate that to you. And most likely it will go in a roundabout way, but I hope what I say will be worthwhile and purposeful. // If I was to go back to the dawning of it all, I guess I'd have to start with Buddy Holly.
You can listen to the lecture on video or SoundCloud or read a transcript of it here:

That is sad to hear that Dee, especially as many still love and adore him. There is nothing worse than an artist who just turns up and has no interest in giving his best performance. Glen I feel always produced the goods even during his bad days.

The Dylan concert experiences were disappointing for me, too.
He put no effort into enunciation.
(It was fun to hang out with his hippie fans.)

Anyway, Bob Dylan has responded to the award of his Nobel Prize for Literature.
According to the New York Times:
We finally have an answer. Bob Dylan will, indeed, accept his Nobel Prize in Literature — probably.
Read the NYT article here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/29/arts/ ... mment.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Side note: I heard Garrison Keillor, author and former radio host of Prairie Home Companion, speak a couple of weeks ago at a conference.
He opened his keynote speech by talking about Bob Dylan and the Nobel.
Keillor was indignant about the award given to Dylan.
He knew Dylan before he became famous as a songwriter; they attended the same college at the same time.
Keillor claimed to have read a few lyrics Dylan was writing during their college years. He remembers thinking that Dylan would never make it as a songwriter because the lyrics seemed nonsensical to him.
He quoted a few lyrics of Dylan's, mocking the lines as "literature": "'Lay Lady Lay'? This line is not even good grammar!! It should be written 'Lie Lady Lie'! And what is the deal with 'the big brass bed'? Dylan wasn't writing from experience; he did not have a brass bed at college!"
(paraphrased)

Hi jay,
I think Glen really appreciated Jerry's playing. Every time he did a tour here in the UK he always seemed to point out that Jerry helped him with the lick on Southern nights. He also seemed to love his song writing as well. Always mentioned what a great song writer he was when he performed "a thing called love".
As regards Dylan, it is striking how many people I know who really love his music. They seem to be as big a fan as when Dylan started out. I guess that says a lot about the quality of his body of work. Katie Melua said on BBC radio 2 this week that "time is a filter for great music". The best stuff lives on way beyond it's life of the charts

Glen must have really appreciated Jerrys approach...because with Anne Murray you can hear several of Jerrys licks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUFmceGugaA
You can tell that he stayed true to playing it in that manner through 2013
Glen also barred more on the GH, and thumbed over later...although it could be because he was on a wider neck with the nylon. His hands were big enough that he could have thumbed over on the nylon. Who knows. He just seems more purer on the frets than he did later.
Dylan...
Totally deserved. His early lyrics were poetic and deep. The guy was a genius.
He has admitted that the later bob dylan is just a shadow of the early one and could not match what he did in the early days.
I love the Sinatra stuff he did...he actually tried to sing again.
Here he is on letterman...quirky bob, but actually swinging for the notes.

Pretty freakin good for someone 74.
Do not waste your money to see him in concert. You cannot understand a thing he says. It is really frustrating to remain in the guys corner when he is just obliterating his own songs. But...Chuck Berry did it also...maybe it is all part of the creative mind.

Good to hear from you, Mike.
Glad you are enjoying this songwriter topic. :)
I agree with your point about the creativity of a songwriter being just as valid as the novelist / poet.
Proust may not have agreed with you....
According to The Guardian on October 17th: no one has heard from Mr. Dylan, not even the Swedish Academy that awarded him the Nobel Prize.
He is touring right now.
On the evening of the day on which the prize was announced, Bob Dylan gave a concert in Vegas, and he made no reference or acknowledgement of the award. However, The Guardian revealed:
In what may have been a veiled allusion to his long-term reputation for what some have called perversity, and others an admirably dogged persistence in forging his own path, Dylan’s set ended with a cover of Frank Sinatra’s Why Try to Change Me Now.
Sounds like a response to me! lol

CNN reported earlier today (October 18th):
Nobel Prize has stopped knock, knock, knocking on Bob Dylan's door
Check out CNN's related (and very funny) video included with their report:

Tonight, NBC News reported Dylan has not yet responded.

I believe he will show up to formally accept his award at the official ceremony in December.

Hey, Cowpoke, thank you for finding more of Glen's other performances of Don't Think Twice by searching the archives.
Yes, isn't it interesting this Dylan song is one of the songs Glen remembered best....

Great post Dee,
Well researched and very heartfelt. Good luck to Bob Dylan. Perhaps this will make the public look at song writers in a new light. Their creativity is just as valid as a novelist or poet. It is just another medium, as the Rolling Stone link pointed out. It is also nice he has been given this award while he can appreciate it. Has anyone heard from him yet?

Found it. It was way back in 2013 that we discussed Glen's versions of Baby Don't Think Twice It's All Right. It was one of the songs that Glen remembered best.

Here's Glen playing it in 2013
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EerlKZbpKxI" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In one these videos he is playing part of the song too. From the Ovation Anniversary DVD Unique Voices.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpxtbiGYZg8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWt_3svGZu4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZfyuqZq0Pk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And he also plays it on George Dougherty's unreleased documentary. Sadly enough, his website http://www.georgedougherty.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which had the complete doc, has been taken offline.

Didn't we make a list of all those performances last year? I believe Glen does a portion of that song on that Ovation anniversary DVD and didn't he also do it on one of the outtakes of George Dougherty's never officially release documentary from 2008? Or maybe one of the tv specials made during the Goodbye Tour?
